Famous at the planetary level, the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum are the only archaeological sites in the world that can return to the visitor a Roman inhabited center, whose life remained firmly on a distant 79th AD, from which Vesuvius he decided to erase it from the ground floor. The city owes its exceptional state of conservation to the way it was buried. Tons of ashes, pumice and lapilli covered it under a layer of over 6 meters while preserving it at the same time by most of the offenses of the time. The same pyroclastic materials, cementing around the bodies invested, have preserved the imprint, allowing archaeologists to return them to the attitudes assumed as a result of short but agonizing agonies. The Roman center that is visiting today is actually the "son" of another , the oldest, founded at the beginning of the 6th century BC by the Osci, Italic people overlaid by the Sanniti. The Italic city left many traces of it. It, in fact, originally inhabited only in the area where the hole is currently located, extended later on, assuming the implant with rectangular insulae still visible. Many of the currently visited buildings were built during the 2nd century BC before Pompeii was conquered by L. Cornelio Silla becoming a Roman colony (80 BC), following the social war against Rome. In the years of the colony there were some important achievements, such as the Spas of the Forum and the Amphitheater. The present appearance was nevertheless achieved in the early imperial age, which dates back to the Grand Gymnasium and public buildings on the east side of the Forum. The latter, surrounded by a portico and dominated by the Temple of Jupiter, is the heart of the city, its political, administrative and commercial center. At the Forum is contrasted with the theaters district, the heart of the Pompeian cultural and religious activities, built in the 2nd century BC. The "playful" activities were largely located on the extreme outskirts where you can visit the Amphitheater and Grand Gymnasium. Of great interest are the public spas: those of the "Forum" and those "Stabiane", characterized by the alternation of temperature-increasing temperatures (frigidarium, tepidarium and calidarium).
