Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh, a nineteenth-century Dutch painter, is one of the most famous artists of all time. March 30, 1853 was born to Groot Zundert, the eldest son of a Protestant pastor. Of a very restless and sensitive nature, he worked for a short time in a company of art dealers, but soon felt a profound religious vocation, which led him to study theology and attend a school of evangelization. At the age of 25 he was sent to preach in the mining region of Borinage, in Belgium. His proximity to the miners and the support of their demands arouse the suspicion of the authorities, who suspend him from his post. Van Gogh remains in this region for a long time, and it is here that he makes his first drawings. At the age of 27 he began to study painting, also thanks to the support of his brother Theo. He made his debut with realistic works in which dark colors prevail: still lifes, village scenes, peasants, weavers, paintings with intense emotional participation. The potato eaters belong to this first phase. In 1886 van Gogh settled in Paris, near his brother Theo, who works as an art dealer. In the French capital, he knows the latest developments in modern art and gives a twist to his painting. Now use light and bright colors, which extends with elongated brush strokes. Extends the range of his subjects, painting portraits and scenes of the city. In 1888 he went to Arles, in Provence, looking for peace. Here he paints landscapes flooded with light, wheat fields and flower gardens. He lives in the famous "yellow house", where he dreams of establishing a community of artists. A friend painter Paul Gauguin joins him in Arles. For a short time the two paint together, but the contrasts soon emerge. After a violent quarrel, Gauguin decides to leave. Van Gogh, deeply shaken, cuts off an ear. Stricken by frequent nervous crises, he is hospitalized several times at the hospital in Arles. Later, he decides to enter the Saint-Remy psychiatric institute.
His great comfort is the affection of his brother Theo, with whom he maintains a close correspondence. Despite the health problems, van Gogh continued to paint, both during admissions, and at Auvers-sur-Oise, where he moved in the spring of 1890. Here, Dr. Gachet, his friend and art lover, takes care of him. In his latest works, the color becomes more and more intense and material, and the brushstroke becomes more and more moved, up to distort the forms. Exemplary is Starry Night where the natural datum is almost transfigured. In the summer of 1890, while he was painting in the middle of the wheat fields, van Gogh was struck by the latest nervous breakdown. He died on July 29, 1890, at age 37, after being shot in the chest.
