Suio Terme and surroundings
In the municipal area of Castelforte, along the Garigliano River, there is a vast spa area where several sources with temperatures ranging from 0 ° to 60 ° are emerging, the waters of which are classified as the first in Italy and the third in Europe for iodine presence. Precisely for this reason the area was one of the first to be inhabited in remote times. The same people of Aurunci used it at the time of Pentapoli Aurunca before the advent of the Romans. The seaside resorts of Suio, whose thermal waters called vescinae (from Vescia's town), have been known since the 3rd century of the empire . The ancient Baths, of which Lucan and Pliny speak, according to some scholars, structurally resemble those of Caracalla and Diocletian. In the area of the Terme Duratorre you can still admire the ancient bath of Nero, evidence of the splendor of the time. The putida caldana, as they were called the thermal springs, also appears in the papal bulls of Adriano IV and in the Cassinese chronicles (XI, XII century). The terminal springs are over thirty, and arise from the subsoil of a narrow area of the valley bottoms. The hyperthermal waters (from 15 ° to 64 °) have a heterogeneous composition: sulphurous-bicarbonate-calcium and alkaline-earthy. Therapeutic qualities are those of sulphurous waters, especially for balneo-fangotherapy, for irrigation and for all treatments of the respiratory system.
