Massa Lubrense and surroundings

Massa Lubrense is situated on the extreme tip of the Sorrento Peninsula, opposite the island of Capri, overlooking both the Gulf of Naples and Salerno. The municipal area is particularly large and is composed of 18 fractions, also connected to each other by a network eristica feel very well developed (about 100km), with the possibility of relaxing walks and interesting excursions along scenic routes, away from the traffic.
According to the most accepted theory the name derives from the Lombard "mansa" (place to place culture), to which was later added the adjective "lubrensis" (from "delubrum", or "pagan temple" on its ruins arose the Church of Our Lady Lobra).
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and is home to one of the most renowned sites of antiquity, "promontorium Minervae", the seat of the temple of which few traces remain. Attached to the Duchy of Sorrento, during the sixteenth century, under the Spanish Viceroy, it became necessary to carry out a number of towers to defend the population against Saracen raids. With the Bourbons the country recorded a strong increase in agricultural, commercial and merchant, and during the French decade (1806-1815) had a strategic role in the defense of the realm. Just from Massa Lubrense Gioacchino Murat, in 1808, he directed troops to conquer Capri, then occupied by the British.
Besides a rich artistic heritage, Massa Lubrense boasts one of the most beautiful natural landscapes and fascinating in the world. We suggest, therefore, among the points of interest:
- The Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the sixteenth-century and remodeled origins in the eighteenth century; inside it preserves a fine majolica floor of the eighteenth century Neapolitan school and paintings by Andrea da Salerno;
- the Church of Santa Maria della Lobra, with coffered ceiling and tiled floor of the eighteenth century, a wooden crucifix of the eighteenth century and a painting of the Madonna dating from the sixteenth century;
- the Convent and Church of San Francesco. The church was built by Liparulo family in 1582; They are kept inside a precious majolica floor of the eighteenth century and a wooden statue of the Virgin of the fifteenth century;
- the Church of the Annunciation, the fourteen century, the precious marble inlays;
- the Church of Santa Teresa, the seventeenth-century origins, with fine stucco and tiled floor of the eighteenth century;
- Conservatory of Ss. Rosario, dating from the early eighteenth century with fine majolica floor attributed Chiaiese;
- the Church of Our Lady of Mercy of the XVI century, with tiled floor, fine stucco and a depiction of the Holy Family of Guido Reni;
- the Church of Sant'Agata, with an altar decorated with mother of pearl and lapis lazuli of the Florentine school of the seventeenth century;
- Marina Lobra, quaint, picturesque fishing village with its typical houses built on the beach and the small port;
- Marina del Cantone, the picturesque beach of Nerano;
- Marina di Puolo, where the remains of columns of the temples of Hercules and Neptune are still visible;
- the rock of Vervece, located a short distance from the beach of Marina della Lobra where every year is laid by divers a wreath to the bronze statue of the Madonna located at about fifteen meters deep;
- the Marine Reserve of Punta Campanella, beautiful and unspoiled stretch of land between the gulfs of Naples and Salerno, manned by the Tower of Punta Campanella, built by the Anjou to defend the population from the Saracen raids on the remains of a Roman villa of the imperial era of ownership the family of Augustus;
- the Jeranto bay, Italian Marine Park protected and cared for by the FAI, the ancient sacred place here ambientarono mythological stories.
