Policastro Bussentino and surroundings
Policastro Bussentino is a town in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, located on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the center of the homonymous gulf, near the mouth of the Bussento river (from which "Bussentino"). It is part of the municipality of Santa Marina. The present day hamlet of Policastro was built at the mouth of the Bussento river as a Greek colony of Rhegion (Reggio Calabria) as a strategic base for trade in the city of the Strait with the Gulf of Taranto connected through the Siris river in 471 BC with the name of Pyxous (Pixunte), with a wall. It then became Roman in the second century BC with the name of Buxentum.Fu from the beginning of the sixth century bishopric, until 1986 when the diocese of Policastro joins that of Teggiano thus becoming the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro. In the seventh century it was the site of a Byzantine castle and took the name of Policastro. Policastro is a seaside resort town, very receptive in summer, also due to good rail and road connections and water quality. There are also numerous campsites in the area. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is very beautiful (http://www.webcilento.com/paesi-del-cilento/policastro-bussentino.html)
