Corciano and surroundings
According to an ancient legend, Corciano owes its name and its origins in Coragino, mythical friend of Ulysses. Its Etruscan-Roman origins are documented by the discovery of an Etruscan necropolis and the numerous finds located at the town hall. In 1242 Corciano was a free municipality, but its although closely linked to the nearby and dominant city of Perugia. The Renaissance period was very prosperous for the city, which allowed it to adorn the buildings unique and valuable works of art. Entering Corciano Porta S. Francesco, you are accessed over Cardinal Rotelli, the main street of the old town. Immediately on the right it is the town hall, (XVI sec.), Originally the residence of the dukes of Corgna, which preserves valuable decorations. Of particular importance are those of the Council chamber ceiling (end of XVI century.), By the Zuccari. Then you reach the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo (XV sec.), Former residence of the representative of the dominant Perugia, alongside the Palazzo dei Priori and the Merchandise. It reaches Coragino in the square, where there is a nice circular well of the sixteenth century. On the right side is the church of Santa Maria Assunta of the thirteenth century. Inside are two valuable paintings: the Banner of Benedetto Bonfigli (1472) and the Assumption by Perugino (1513). Then you reach the church of St. Christopher, the first half of 1500, which houses a collection of sacred art. Of particular interest is the Museo della Casa Contadina which reproduces, with authentic home and work objects, the typical corcianese home of the pre-industrial era. Also noteworthy is the ancient "Spedale" of the village, which has a fresco of 1494 attributed to Andrea d'Assisi called the Skill. Just behind is the Tower of Porta Santa Maria, Corciano emblem, built in 1482, followed by a beautiful promenade built over the ancient walls, where you can admire two Romanesque sculptures of lions. The church of San Francesco, Gothic, contains various works of art, including a sixteenth-century crucifix, a painting of the flag, a statue of San Bernardino Orsini, and a table of Caporali, in addition to the Umbrian-Sienese school frescoes fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Among the most important events organized in the city we should absolutely mention the Corciano Festival.
