Fuscaldo Marina and surroundings

Fuscaldo rises on an area extended between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the coastal chain. Of particular value is the historic center, set in the hills. Also known as a "stone village", Fuscaldo was first mentioned in 589 AD as Castrum Fuscalidi. The palaces of exquisite medieval and Renaissance architecture are to be visited, including, in particular, Palazzo Valenza; the ancient churches, the hundred portals, the arches, the small terraces and the bell towers chiseled by the stonemasons, local stone artisans. The main resource of the territory is constituted by the fishing of anchovies, the blue fish par excellence, present in the waters of the evocative seaside village and undisputed protagonist of the event "Fuscaldo: Alici in Festival" which recalls, every summer, tens of thousands of visitors. stone and wind, solitary and severe, perched in a panoramic position at about 350 meters high. As soon as you enter the historic center, you can admire the vestiges of a glorious and ancient past. Some say of Osca or Enotra origin: who sustains, instead, that the Greeks of Sybaris, in the aftermath of the defeat by the crotonians, founded their first urban nucleus around the pre-existing fortress of Elce. However the territory was certainly inhabited by the Romans and it is known that it was a place of encampment at the time of the Lombards. The name Castrum Fuscaldi, in fact, is found, for the first time, on the occasion of the Longobard invasion between 584-591 AD, by the third Lombard king, Autari the Flavio. To confirm that the territory of Fuscaldo was inhabited in Greek and Roman times we can mention the discovery, in past centuries, of numerous tombs: specifically those in the district of San Leonardo, Garrafa, San Pietro and Lago, all containing coins and jewels from the Greek era Roman. On Fuscaldo, Demetrio De Seta writes: «The Terme Luigiane, once the territory of Fuscaldo, were well known in antiquity, visited by Plato when he went to Syracuse; from Pliny in his wanderings along the coasts of the Tyrrhenian; it is believed that those waters were known under the name of Acque Calidae Tempsea and that is of the Tempsa Tirrena of Pliny ». The territory of Fuscaldo, at the time of the Magna Graecia, was under the jurisdiction of Sibari and was an important outlet for the isthmic road Sibari-San Marco-Tyrrhenian Sea.
