Castelasardo and sorroundings
It's one of the best preserved medieval villages of Sardinia and also of Italy. Very picturesque, staggered on a trachyte cone, with a very wide view of the Gulf of Asinara, the mountains of Gallura and Corsica. The town, enclosed in the ancient walls, is crossed by narrow streets and steep steps, where you sometimes see women busy weaving graceful baskets and made of palm, reed and sedge leaves, often decorated with figures and ornamental decorations. Founded in the years 1101/02 by the Genoese family of Doria, from which its first name of Castel Genovese, it passed to the Aragonese in 1448 taking the name of Castell'Aragonese; it's only in 1769 that it became Castelsardo. These dominations are due to the strategic importance of the fortified castle, it was in fact considered an impregnable fortress, as well as strategic center of trade and commerce. Since the Roman period trade was mainly done by sea, of which we have important traces, such as Baia Ostina (Agustina Bay), Lu Grannaddu (from Portum Granaticum) and the semi-circular harbor of Frigiano, with a defense tower. The different cultures that passed by here, Genovese, Catalan and Piemontese, have forged this town and they left their mark not only in the dialect but also in human activities, in the folklore (including the important and unique Lunissanti Easter procession, dating back to the Middle Ages and preserved perfectly intact in its original fascinating ritual, which each year attracts the interest of many tourists and fans) but also in monuments: the Town Hall, the Franciscan church of Santa Maria delle Grazie with the adjoining convent, the Cathedral, dating back to 1500, dedicated to Sant'Antonio Antonio Abate, which houses together with other works, an important icon that has in its center a Madonna and Child by the Master of Castelsardo, now considered the most important Sardinian painter of 1400. The town offers a panorama of singular beauty, a major tourism destinations on the island.
