Lecce and surroundings
On a plain at the base of the Salento plateau lies Lecce - the "southern Florence" - one of the most interesting cities in the region for its, typically 17th century, architectural physiognomy. Of very ancient origins, the city was characterized by two particularly brilliant moments: the Roman era and that of the Kingdom of Naples. At this time there was a great development in the construction of buildings, monuments and mansions characterized by a magnificent and rich ornamental and architectural scenery that deserved the definition of "Lecce baroque". The imaginative and meticulous work of sculpture was facilitated by the use of local stone, ductile and easy to inlay. The visit of Lecce can begin from Piazza Duomo, once used as a fortified citadel and today considered the most elegant "living room" of the city. The magnificence of the Duomo, by Zimbalo, Cino e Penna, the high five-storey bell tower, the Bishop's Palace and the Seminary Palace mark the perimeter of the square, one of the monumental works that best represents the magnificence of the Lecce style.
