Cassino and surroundings

On the mountain which overlooks the splendid Rapido and Liri river valley, stands the Abbey of Montecassino, epicenter of Benedictine devotion in the world and a national monument since 1866. Here Benedetto matured his project of monastic life, articulating more fully the Rule, with the life of the cenoby centered on the figure of the abbas. The Abbey of Montecassino, repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, has always been one of the greatest centers of irradiation of Benedictine spirituality and Western culture. Already in the early Middle Ages it housed numerous monks and possessed a library and a scriptorium famous throughout Christendom. Within the walls the monks have transcribed the works of classical antiquity. Today precious documents such as the "cassino placito" are conserved, the first legal document in the vernacular, the famous illuminated and rare codes of incunabula.
