Procida and surroundings
Procida is the smallest of the three major islands of the Gulf of Naples (the other two are Ischia and Capri) and also the closest to the mainland, just 3.4 km from the peninsula of Flegrea. Its perimeter is about 16 km, while the surface does not exceed 4 sq. Km. The hilltop Terrain Hill (91 m) is the highest point of the island. Near Procida, connected by a bridge, there is another small island, Vivara, currently uninhabited and used as a nature reserve. Procida and Vivara, together with Ischia and Nisida, belong to the group of the Phlegrean Islands, so called for the common belonging to the geological area of the Flegrei Fields. As all the phlegly islands, Procida is of volcanic origin. The island was formed following the eruption of at least four volcanoes, now largely submerged by seawater and no longer in activity, but the remains of which can still be seen, especially if the area of Vivara is observed. it has the appeal of the other two islands of the Gulf, yet its visit still manages to restore those images and flavors of the past centuries, which is becoming more and more difficult to capture in the other destinations, established stages of international tourism. The silence of Vivara, the colors of Corricella, the port of Chiaiolella seem to be there, undisturbed, for centuries careless of the alternation of ages. The mysticism of Holy Week in Procida is very deep and lived intensely by the whole population, which participates in numerous at the processions of Thursday and Friday Good, one of the most important and sensational events of the island. The island has inspired many authors over the years and today it is remembered for at least three masterpieces, the novels Graziella by Alfonso de Lamartine and The Island of Arturo of Elsa Morante and the film Il Postino, the last interpretation by Massimo Troisi before his death.
