Riace and Riace Marina

The first document that speaks of Riace's existence is of 1562 about the death of Christopher Chrysostom and his probable proclamation of saint. The bell of the Church of the Assumption then writes: Hanc finca fecit campanam Confraternitas s.mi Sacraments, AD 1596. In those days the city had a walled wall and three access doors: St. Catherine's Gate, Gate of Sant'Anna and the Water Gate. In the vicinity of the coast, the Casamona Tower was built at 8km to prevent the Turkish incursions, which have been attested to since 1583. In 1640 the community of Riace has 400 people. In this period and until 1811 it was part of the Royal Democracies of Stilo, as its farmhouse and followed its affairs. In 1756 there are 1001 people present in the farmhouse. In 1773 in the coastal area of ​​Riace was built the Chapel of San Biagio, now called a national monument. In 1972, Riace was discovered, the two Greek statues renamed: Bronzi di Riace, now at the Reggio Calabria Museum
