Praia a Mare and surroundings
Praia a Mare is a town of 6.871 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza. Originally a populous village of peasants and fishermen emerging on the narrow beaches between the river Noce, north of the border with Basilicata and the rocky buttress over the alluvial plain of the Lao River, was originally the marina hamlet of the common border Aieta. Praia a Mare becomes common administratively autonomous in 1928. For centuries Praia has maintained the integrity and the living habits, traditions and traditions of the nearby township. The etymology of the name is uncertain, although it recalls the commodity trade of men and men who in antiquity took place on the Tyrrhenian coast: it would come from "Plaga Sclavorum", the Sclavoni or Schiavoni beach, or "Plaga Slavorum" Slavoni. The town has undergone considerable development in the sixties and nineties thanks to the investments of the Marzotto group and the Agnelli family. Today, Praia a Mare, which also includes the Dino Island, lives mainly in tourism.
Around:
Dino Island - Small island rising in front of the Fiuzzi resort. There are several marine caves, among which the most famous are the Blue Grotto (for the intense blue color of the water inside) and the Cave of the Lion (the name comes from the presence of a rock that resembles much to a lion lying down).
Municipal Museum Praia a Mare City - Museum - A permanent collection of modern and contemporary art has been created with the contribution of numerous Italian and foreign artists who have donated to the institution altogether over two hundred works.
Palazzo Il Fortino - During the 16th century the strong defensive of the Fumarulo di Praia, which the lords of Aieta built and destined to defend the coastal coastline, dates back.
Fiuzzi Tower - Built on a 15-meter-high cliff-edge of Fiuzzi, on which Angioinus was already present, is one of the largest towers in the area. She was guarded by the Saracen invasion.
Church of the Sacred Heart
Church of Saint Paul the Apostle
Church of Jesus Christ Salvatore - Recently constructed structure collects the cult of the residents of the Forest resort.
Castle of Praia Fortress - Fortified complex dating back to the 14th century Norman building.
Madonna della Grotta Sanctuary - So called because it is located inside a natural cave inside a hill. The Madonna della Grotta, whose legend tells that the commander of a Turkish bastion was forced by the crew to place a statue (stolen) of the XV century depicting the Madonna inside the cave.
Sardinian Cave - So called for the copious presence of sardines there once caught a particular network called "cianciorro" ("giangiuorro" or "giangiuorr" in dialect).
