Paola and the surrounding area

It is mainly known for having given birth to San Francesco di Paola and for housing the Sanctuary of the Holy, center of the order of the little friars. The town is one of the destinations of religious tourism in Calabria. The main places of interest are the Sanctuary of San Francesco ,the Badia, the so-called Sotterra church (in the hamlet with the same name - already Gaudimare - with paintings of which the oldest ones are variously dated to the early Middle Ages), Roman ruins, Palazzo Scorza, Paola Castle. The monumental fountain of the seven canals stands at the foot of a long staircase, and is a work of local artisans, dating back to 1636. The fountain opens like a big fan, to recall the peacock tail, a symbol of Paola: it originally had 12 holes (Abate Pacichelli) while today it is made up of two arms, whose walls have seven panels with seven lithium protomes, out of which water comes out, which is then collected from a canal and poured into a semicircular tank. The stone shields, although eroded by time, are still intact: they depict the peacock symbol and the Spinelli coat of arms, which Paola bought at the beginning of the sixteenth century, governing it for about three centuries. The presence of the sea, together with the beauty of the mountain ranges in the immediate vicinity make the city a tourist destination of a certain importance
