Nocera Terinese is on a plateau where the ancient Terina was located, destroyed by the Saracens at the time of St. Nile in the 10th century, at the junction between the River Grande and the River Savuto. The only gateway was the "door" of Tramontana (now called the "Old Gate" by villagers), on which the castle, and Fortress used to be, now reduced to just ruins. Terina was a thriving colony of Magna Grecia, which was founded by Crotones in the fifth century; equipped with a natural harbor (which was then the port of Nave di Arata). There still is a big rock called "Stone of the Ship", no longer under water, near the railway station: some iron rings found on the rock, suggest that they used to use it to moor the boats that were coming in that harbor. There was a quarry in the middle of the city, that led to the harbor on the other side: the entrance is called the seven doors, because of the seven doors that used to be guarded by seven guards at the time. At present, there still is an external city wall, houses foundations, aqueduct remnants, ruins and other Hellenistic-Roman buildings and brucies, with various excavation findings (cluttered idols, vascular ceramics, coins, bronze sheet fragments). During the Holy Week, in some towns of Calabria, there are still a number of impressive and significant commemorations that recall the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. Among the most interesting of these ceremonies are the ones that are held annually in Nocera Terinese. These are events of ancient origins that passed down from generation to generation and have been preserved to this day, resisting the inexorable passing of time, overcoming the obstacles placed by the Church which has never been entirely favorable to such rites.
