The old town of Amantea, clinging to the cliff of the Castle, although not particularly large, certainly has a great tourist interest both for the presence of monumental buildings and a great panorama as well as for the characteristics of the urban settlement. The town is in dominant position on the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the coastal plain of quite recent alluvial origin: walled up to the nineteenth century, the location was one of the strongest in Calabria Citra. It is inevitable that before the Byzantines, and then the Arabs, thought to fortify this natural citadel by developing the town on the sloping slope. Before it was opened, in the 1930s, what is now [when?] Is the old roadway of 18 Lower Tirrena State Road, the old town was virtually completely blocked by automobile circulation. Even today, the trails of access to the ruins of the Castle and of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi are difficult to reach even walkable walkways, and a good part of the old town, around the Church of Sant'Elia and the former Collegio of the Jesuit Fathers, is unattainable by car. From the 1950s the urban development of the modern part of the city began, in the aforementioned coastal plain originated by the Catocastro River and the Santa Maria torrent: orthogonal roads intersecting, low houses also for fear of the earthquakes that have often devastated Calabria, and above all a great commercial vitality. The two main arteries of the modern expansion of Amantea are via Regina Margherita and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, which meet in Piazza Commerciale, a true town center of the lower town. The town is crossed by the busy State Road 18 Tirrena Inferiore, in the new road dating back to the sixties and by the Southern Tirrenica Railway which is the vital artery of the connections between the North and the South of Italy. A symbol of the new urban expansion is the Amantea Lungomare, which runs parallel to the Tyrrhenian Sea beach for more than a kilometer
