Matera and surroundings

Matera is one of the oldest in the world whose territory is home to testimonies of human settlements from the Palaeolithic to the present day. It is an extraordinary page written by the man through the millennia of this long history.Matera is the city of the Sassi, the original urban nucleus, developed from the natural caves excavated in the rock and then modeled into increasingly complex structures within two large natural amphitheatres that are the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. In fact, in the central square Piazza Vittorio Veneto there are some openings that show the original level of the places, nowadays called ipogei, which are located below the same square. The hypogeums are articulated in continuity forming a real submerged city connected with the Sassi. Here there are exceptional rock structures such as the large cistern called Palombaro Lungo with walls 15 meters high and until recently navigable.The historic center of Matera is developed with streets that connect several squares along an axis called the eighteenth-century axis of the city because taken its physiognomy from the end of 1600. In the center of Matera there are a number of important palaces and churches that have had a particular significance in the history of the town. The unrepeatable architecture of the Sassi of Matera tells the ability of man to adapt perfectly to the environment and the natural environment, using with simple features such as the constant temperature of the excavated environments, the same calcarenite of the rocky counterpart for the construction of houses outside land and use of slopes for water control and meteoric phenomena.
