Chianciano Terme and surroundings

Chianciano Terme is a small town of Etruscan origin, situated in the green Tuscan hills, in the southern part of the province of Siena between Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, a few steps from Umbria. According to some historians, Chianciano was formerly known as Clancianum "from here by Chiana", but date back to the XII century the first written documents in which appears the name of "Chianciano": in 1171 in a donation act, in 1230 in a document in which the location is defined as "Common".
In the Middle Ages Chianciano Terme for a long time, it was subjugated by Counts Rimbotti-Manenti (1230-1280), then expelled for having reduced the country to a state of poverty. In 1287 it became a free municipality, the city was divided into three Terzieri: the Terziero of the bourgeoisie represented by merchants and entrepreneurs; the Tertiary of the Militi or Knights and the Tertiary of the Pedestrians, namely the craftsmen of the peasants and the servants. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Chianciano was still in difficult times: the contrasts with Montepulciano, a new plague epidemic in 1476 after that of 1348, was later conquered by the Florentines and rebuilt under the rule of Cosimo I dé Medici. In the XVII century thanks to a letter from the hydrothrobist Andrea Baccio, the city of Chianciano was revalued for the preciousness of its healing waters, the first spa facilities were built and from this moment the history of Chianciano will be connected with the events of the Terme. the main spa resorts of Europe, characterized by a mild climate, is immersed in the green of the parks of ancient villas and gardens of modern hotels, equipped to accommodate each year an increasing number of tourists who choose this type of alternative holiday to regenerate and recover not only physical but also psychic form.Chianciano with its springs Santa, Fucoli and Sillene ra represents a unique thermal reality: the Holy Water flows from the source at a temperature of 33 ° C, it is indicated for the treatment of hepatic dysfunction, chronic inflammation of the gallbladder and improves digestive function; Water Fucoli flows from the source at a temperature of 16.5 ° C, is indicated to regulate intestinal motility, activate diuresis and exert an anti-inflammatory action on the gastroduodenal mucosa; The Water Brine, whose name comes according to some of the Etruscan god Sethlas, and others by Silla, springs from the source at a temperature of 38.5 ° C is mainly indicated for mud therapy of the liver region and in the carbogenic balneotherapy. Another source in the territory of Chianciano Terme is that of Sant'Elena, which flows at a temperature of 13 ° C, is indicated in the treatment of kidney disease and in the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, increases diuresis and facilitates digestive functions. From Chianciano Terme via Viale della Libertà, you reach the Chianciano country that rises within the walls, past Porta Rivellini you can admire the castle of the Conti Manenti known as the "Monastery", while at the bottom of the street is the Tower of the 'Clock from which you can see a suggestive panorama, characterized by the snowy peaks of the Cetona and Amiata mountains. After passing the Tower you will reach the main square of the village, Piazza Matteotti, here is the seat of the Geo-Archaeological Association. In recent years, in order to ensure a better connection between the old town and the spa town, several urban works have been carried out in order to maintain a continuity between two distinct but united history and art.
