Even the name of the Leucosia Village has ancient Greek origins: it is the toponym chosen to indicate the islet and the tip that to the south close the gulf of Castellabate and Salerno. Santa Maria di Castellabate and surroundings

The city of Castellabate is located on a hill overlooking the wide coastal strip between Punta Licosa and the Promontory of Tresino. The name of the municipality recalls that the fortified village was built on the initiative of the abbot of Cava de 'Tirreni, Costabile Gentilcore, which requested authorization from the sovereign in 1123, to defend above all the important commercial ports of Licosa, San Marco and Santa Maria. For the rest it derives from the medieval Latin castellum, a fortified village. In addition to the beautiful landscapes that make Castellabate a pearl of the territory, there are also many buildings of historical-artistic and architectural value. The Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta (dating back to the fourteenth century ) is an example: inside, the floor of the baptistery in ceramic dating from the fifteenth century, the baptismal font from the twelfth century, resting on a pedestal dated to the early Christian period, the frescoes of the Giotto school and the bust gilded copper of San Costabile. Among the churches of the village emerge the so-called Church of the Pietà, dating back to the fourteenth century but renovated around 1756, containing a polychrome statue with Michelangelo's echoes, the Church of San Biagio, of the sixteenth century, owned by the Matarazzo family, and finally the Oratory of Santa Maria de Gulia. In 1837 the Church of Santa Maria a Mare was built, located in the locality of the same name, while only in 1915 was the Church of San Marco built, known for the presence of a port and a fishing village dating back to Roman times. Finally, in 1925 the Church of Sant'Antonio was built, in the locality of Lago. The castle that dominates the area is certainly worth visiting. It opens onto a square next to which stands the Palazzo Perrotta, built around 1740, which hosted Gioacchino Murat in 1811, passing through the village during his journey in the South. Not far away is the house where Ruggero Leoncavallo lived. Also noteworthy are the Palazzo dei Conti Matarazzo, the Torre del Barone Perrotti (formerly Torre Pagliarolo) and the imposing Palazzo del Principe Belmonte, which his relatives, the Marquis Granito, built in 1733 by merging pre-existing buildings. the Palazzo dei Granito in Punta Licosa, built in the first half of the eighteenth century with its chapel, and the seventeenth-century fortified farmhouse called la Torretta, in San Marco. Do not forget the coastal towers, from the thirteenth-century one of Tresino, which in 1277 falling within the competence of the local administration of Agropoli, to that of Licosa, contemporary to the previous one, to the other called Pagliarola or della Marina, medieval but enhanced in the years 1570-71. In the period 1567-69 the Cannitiello Tower was built, near Licosa , in 1569 that of Ogliastro, in 1570 the other sighting, located on the hill of Licosa and called Torricella or Torre del Semaforo. At the end of 1592 it dates, however, the realization action of the Tower of the Marina di Ogliastro, also called the Arena or the Ripe Rosse.
