Gallipoli and its surroundings

Gallipoli, bathed by the Ionian Sea, rises on the western coast of the Salento peninsula, in the Gulf of Taranto. Characteristic is the division of the town into two well-defined areas: the "old city" and the "new village". The charming historic center, rich in antique buildings and frescoes, stands on a limestone island connected to the mainland by a masonry bridge. Around 1500, the mighty walls of the castle were constructed to cope with enemy attacks, reshaped in height, at the end of the 19th century, to the current panoramic road that, surrounded by the whole islet, allows you to enjoy fantastic scenery ancient walls a single fragment still in good condition today). Looking north you can see a part of the Neretina coast, while the bay formed by the Pizzo promontory is clearly visible to the south. Near the coast, to the west, we meet the Pigeons Rock, the Isle of the Field and in particularly clear days you can see the profiles of the Sila Mountains, while the southwest is clear on the island of Sant'Andrea, home of a great lighthouse, built in 1866. Crossing the bridge, we immediately meet the last bastion of an ancient past, the Greek-Roman fountain, the oldest in Italy. You enter the "new village" where the "Skyscraper" is inaugurating the passage to modernity, at the entrance of Corso Roma, a neuralgic street that divides the new city into two shrubs called "scirocco" and "tramontana". Modern buildings have largely replaced the buildings built between the end of the eighteenth century and the early 1900s. The complex is completely opposite to the old town, and there are a number of shops and tourist facilities ready to accommodate about two hundred thousand presentations of the summer months. It is clear that Gallipoli has, over recent decades, been experiencing remarkable building expansion and can now be considered one of the the most flourishing center of Salento as well as a desirable tourist destination, but has not lost its impressive charge given above all by lovely panoramas and the images (above) are testimony to it.
