Siena and surroundings
Located in central-southern Tuscany, the province of Siena extends into the most famous and fascinating areas of Tuscany such as the southern hills of Chianti, Val d'Elsa and Val di Merse, Val d'Arbia, Val di Chiana and Siena. the Val d'Orcia, up to the slopes of Monte Amiata. The capital, Siena, is a magnificent city of art with characteristic alleys, districts and towers, artisan shops and palaces that make it an unmissable destination for Italian and foreign tourists. Moving in the lands of Siena and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of these places is a magical adventure, a journey through multiple landscapes, from dense forests to ancient farms, from clayey reliefs to stupendous trajectories. The territory also preserves numerous testimonies from the Middle Ages on the Via Francigena, the great pilgrimage route to Rome that crossed the Val d'Elsa, the city of Siena and the Val d'Orcia. And along these campaigns you can admire picturesque abbeys such as Sant'Antimo, Romanesque churches and characteristic villages such as San Quirico d'Orcia or San Gimignano, which still retain their original appearance. The Chianti area, home of the famous wine, is also an enchanting piece of Tuscany that hosts villages like Castellina and very dense vineyards like those of Radda in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti and Castelnuovo Berardenga or gluttonous food and wine itineraries. The landscape south of Siena towards the medieval center of Asciano is dominated by the typical Crete, clayey lands where erosion has created cracks, furrows and slits: a suggestive area in which stands the imposing Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. Val d'Elsa is also very suggestive, with the characteristic towns of Colle di Val d'Elsa, Poggibonsi and San Gimignano, which contains an invaluable artistic heritage. The Val di Merse, the greenest area of the territory, presents solitary but fascinating places such as the ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano, dating back to the 15th century. XIII. Even the Val di Chiana offers emotions and thermal wellbeing in very famous places of ancient tradition, such as Chianciano Terme, Montepulciano and San Casciano dei Bagni. Hills and ravines, the famous Tuscan cypresses, the river, olive groves and vineyards: this is the landscape offered by the Val d'Orcia and protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here there are magnificent centers including Pienza, San Quirico, Montalcino and Castiglione, while in the west the horizon is closed by Monte Amiata and the solitary Rocca di Radicofani.
