Pompeii and surroundings

Pompeii has been a popular touristic destination for about 250 years since the days of the Grand Tour. In 2008, it attracted nearly 2.6 million visitors, making it one the most popular tourist sites in Italy. It is part of the largest National Park of Vesuvius and was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The objects buried in Pompeii have been remarkably preserved for 2000 years; In fact, the total lack of air and moisture have allowed these items to remain underground with little or no deterioration. Pompei is a partially buried Roman city near Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the town of Pompeii. Along with Herculaneum, Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Vesuvius, which lasted two days in the year 79 AD It all happened the day after the Vulcanalia, religious celebration in honor of the Roman god of fire. The eruption buried Pompei under a 4 to 6 metre layer of ashes and pumice stone and the whole city just disappeared for 1700 years, up to the accidental discovery of 1749. Since then, this site has provided a incredibly accurate picture of a city within the Roman Empire. Pompei ruins are situated close to the modern city of Pompei, located on a spur formed by a lava flow north of the mouth of the river Sarno (known as Sarnus in ancient times). Today Pompei is located on the inland, but in the past it was closer to the coastline. The ruins are located about 8 km South of the Vesuvius, in Naples' bay, and they cover an area of about 163 ha.
