Ferrandina and surroundings

The etymological origin of the place name is closely linked to the foundation of the town, which was sought in the last years of the 20th century by Frederick of Aragon, who gave the name to the village in memory of his father Ferrante. However, Ractioppi advances another hypothesis based on a different dating of the same name, mentioned in earlier documents compared to the period of the foundation of the village. Following an archaeological excavation, a primitive settlement dating back to the age of iron was identified. Following the foundation of Federico d'Aragona, it became a city, welcoming also the inhabitants of nearby Uggiano, destroyed by an earthquake. He achieved a thriving development in the fifteenth century, thanks in particular to the fortunate activities of agriculture and shepherding, alongside the maestro of local women who spun a particular wool and cotton cloth, also known in the Kingdom of Naples. During this period, after the usual alternation of some feudal lords to power, became the property of Fabrizio Pignatelli. Architectural heritage is rich in beautiful testimonies of the past, such as the ancient monasteries dedicated respectively to Santa Chiara, S. Domenico and S. Francesco or the sixteenth century Palazzo Centorio and finally the parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria della Croce and erected in the year of the foundation of the town.
