Roccacasale and surroundings
Roccacasale is a charming village of about 750 inhabitants perched on the slopes of the Morrone, at an altitude of 450 m. above sea level. The municipal territory is included in the National Park of Majella.Il village is dominated by a castle-fence defense of the Middle Ages, which offers a spectacular view over the whole valley Peligna. The oldest part of the small village - the highest, at the foot of the castle part - is characterized by evocative and steep narrow streets and alleys that climb among old stone houses, many of which are uninhabited for some time. The beautiful parish church of St. Michele Arcangelo (XVI sec.) Acts almost as a hinge between the medieval village and the more recently constructed area, where there is the small church of St. Antonio Abate (XIX sec.). the remains of the unique fortified enclosure, whose plant is still recognizable, overlooking the ancient village; The castle, situated inside the Exchequer Peligno to control a wide tratturale area, has always played a strategic role as a defense against any enemy infiltration from the Cinquemiglia Plan. The historical building phases of the castle along with those of the ancient core of Roccacasale, are closely connected to the history of De Sanctis family, who retained the title and ownership of the fort until the abolition of feudalism. The fort, situated on the slopes of Mount Morrone, including Sulmona and Popoli, is also of considerable interest to the architectural presence throughout the area and in the village and is also very impressive from an environmental.
