La Thuile and surroundings
La Thuile lies on a wide basin at 1441 meters above sea level, in an area surrounded by dense forests, dominated by the imposing presence of high mountains and extensive glaciers. Starting from La Thuile, it is possible to climb to the nearby Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo where you can observe a curious fence made of stones: it is the "Cromlech", a megalithic monument that dates back to the Iron Age. In the area there are also the remains of two "Mansiones" from the Roman era, which testify to the importance of La Thuile as a stopping place on the Via delle Gallie.In the Savoy era La Thuile was an important bulwark against the invasions that came from France and already in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it suffered numerous looting by French troops in transit. At the Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo is the Chanousia botanical garden, founded in 1897 to protect the characteristic flora of the alpine world. The abbot Pierre Chanoux, a priest of great goodness and vast culture, a tireless mountaineer, a pioneer and a precursor of modern mountaineering, was wanted by the abbot Pierre. : it is an appointment that recalls the past, when the Savoyard and Valdostan shepherds met for the exchange and the livestock market, during a day of friendship. Discontinued during the war, today this event has turned into a popular folkloristic festival in which the inhabitants of the two sides of the Colle participate, valley dwellers, shepherds and tourists. Associated with the event there is also one of the "Bataille de Reines" preliminary rounds. The parish church of La Thuile is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and news of it has been found as early as the year 1113, but the date of its foundation is controversial; at its side, a beautiful bell tower, dating from around the 15th century. La Thuile is part of an international ski area, connected to the town of La Rosière in Savoy. In an extraordinary succession of views, 160 kilometers of slopes meet the needs of every type of skier; the high altitudes of the lifts also make it possible to ski until late spring. In summer La Thuile is the starting point for ascents to the Rutor glacier or for easier excursions in the area of Lake Arpy, to the lakes of Rutor and to the beautiful plateau of Joux.
