Venice and surroundings

Elegant, precious, inimitable, fun and romantic: so is Venice, a gem of the Veneto and Italian tourist scene where churches, palaces, ancient bridges, monuments and squares tell the artistic and cultural liveliness that has marked and still marks the history of this city . Venice - LagunaCuore button of Venice is the stunning Piazza San Marco, the most elegant lounge in Europe, surrounded by works of indisputable value: the imposing Bell Tower and the Basilica with its five portals and the decorations of marbles and mosaics that anticipate the glitter and the richness of the interiors; the Ducal Palace, symbol of the golden times of the Serenissima; Torre dei Mori, better known as Clock Tower, for the masterpiece of engineering that for centuries marks the time of Venice; the Napoleonic Wing, where the Correr Museum is located. Several historic cafés on the square. Not to be missed, the wonderful Florian Coffee: opened in 1720, is the oldest coffee in Italy. The interiors, elegant, stand out for stucco, paintings, mirrors ... Among the illustrious customers who sat at his tables, there are also Giacomo Casanova, Lord Byron, Ugo Foscolo, Gabriele d'Annunzio. Very far from Piazza San Marco is located in Campo Santo Stefano, with its homonymous church. The "fields" of Venice are historical squares, often embellished in the center by precious monuments and dominated by imposing and beautiful religious buildings, from which they are named. The streets, on the other hand, are called calli (the singular is "calle") that winds through two continuous rows of buildings. The Venetians say that the best way to know their wonderful city is to take a calle and to walk with your nose up, watching everything that will be present in front ... Without a guide, without a map and without fear of getting lost, as if by magic, you will always arrive ... in Piazza San Marco! From Piazza San Marco, crossing the famous Bridge of Sighs, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the lagoon, you arrive in the Castello district, rich in architectural and artistic masterpieces where you will find the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, that of San Zaccaria and the church of San Giovanni in Bragora, considered by many one of the most beautiful in the city. Continuing the walk among the calli, not to miss a visit to the Arsenal, for centuries the largest in the world, built in the twelfth century and then expanded thanks to the great politico-commercial development of Venice, today the seat of the Biennale d'arte and of architecture. The International Film Festival is held in the historical Palace of Cinema at the Lido. From St. Mark's Square is visible the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and the high bell tower rising from the monumental complex, masterpiece of great architects , including the famous Andrea Palladio. A true open-air museum that can be seen by the waters of the Grand Canal, the main "road" of the city, which begins at Punta della Dogana, the ancient port of the Serenissima, with its characteristic triangular shape. Four are the bridges which cross the canal: the Academy Bridge, the Rialto Bridge (the oldest and the most famous), the Scalzi Bridge and the Bridge of the Constitution. Punta della Dogana, the area of Venice where the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal are divided, houses some buildings, including the Maranella complex which, together with Palazzo Grassi, both of which are the foundation of the François Pinault Foundation, excellence for contemporary art in Italy and the world. Do not miss the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which is a prestigious collection of 20th century artworks at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. Continuing, there are other important museum sites: the Gallerie dell'Accademia, housed in the majestic complex of the Scuola Grande de la Carità, which also includes the homonymous church and monastery, and Ca 'Rezzonico, one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces, Museum of the eighteenth century Venetian. Always in the western part of the city, there are the sestieri (the six areas where Venice is divided) of Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce and with some of the more "fields" famous in Venice, framed by beautiful religious buildings and stately palaces.
Around Venice, a corolla of islands: Burano, famous for lace production; Murano, for glass processing; Pellestrina, characterized by sand dunes and high canes; Torcello, one of the oldest human settlements in the area.
