Perugia and its surroundings

Etruscan town of the fifth century, occupied by the Romans and destroyed, Perugia is rebuilt by Augusto with the name of Augusta Perusia. Already in the 9th century it is a free municipality and in the XIII century it dominates most of the region. In order to avoid papal rule, it is given to various honors, until Paul III finally conquered it in 1540. The Etruscan period remains the large walled walls and gates integrated into Roman, communal and Renaissance times. Among these are Porta Mandorla, Porta Marzia and the Etruscan Arch, the main access road. The beautiful Umbrian town houses architectural jewels of remarkable value such as the Cathedral, Palazzo dei Priori, the Rocca Paolina and the most famous Fountain in the thirteenth century by Giovanni and Nicola Pisano.
The most characteristic monuments of the city are in the medieval old town, with roads generally narrow and steeply sloping, and date back to the XII and XIII centuries. In Piazza IV November is the Fountain of the City, a symbol of the city, built in the 13th century on the design of Friar Bevignate from Perugia and decorated with sculptures by Nicolò and Giovanni Pisano, with the collaboration of Arnolfo di Cambio. The cycles of the months alternating with the zodiac signs, the symbols of the arts and biblical episodes are depicted. On the square appears the side of the cathedral of San Lorenzo, rebuilt in gothic forms between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, while the façade, gives on Danti square. The interior, divided by tripartite naves, houses the Chapel of San Bernardino and the famous Deposition, a sixteenth-century painting by Federico Barocci. On the staircase is the statue of Pontiff Julius III and, on the outside, the parchment of the fifteenth century, famous for the sermons of San Bernardino. Inside, the chapel of the Holy Ring contains what, according to legend, is the wedding ring of Mary. Square IV November also faces the Palazzo Comunale, or Palazzo dei Priori, one of the largest public buildings in Italy medieval, built on several occasions between the 12th and the 15th centuries, all in square-shaped stone. Inside, the Chamber of Commerce's Chamber is beautifully decorated; the Notary Hall preserves frescoes by Pietro Cavallini; that of Audiences is one of the best preserved environments of the Renaissance merchant society.
On the third floor there is the National Gallery of Umbria, undoubtedly among the most important of Italy, renewed, in arrangement, after the earthquake a few years ago, with works by Duccio di Boninsegna, Arnolfo di Cambio, Beato Angelico, Piero Francesca, Perugino, Pinturicchio. From Piazza IV Novembre, Via delle Volte goes down to Piazza Cavallotti, through one of the most fascinating scenery of the medieval city. On the corner with the Vannucci course there is the palace of notaries and, on the other side of the course, is the 18th century Donini palace. Here stands piazza Italia, on the outskirts where the Rocca Paolina was built by the pope. From the Renaissance period remains the Capitano del Popolo Palace in Piazza Matteotti. To visit are also the church of San Severo, with a fresco by Raffaello, the oratory of San Bernardino, with bas-reliefs of Agostino di Duccio and the basilica of San Domenico. The Pauline fortress, built in 1540 and demolished after annexation to Kingdom of Italy as a sign of freedom, it houses inside several movable stairs that pass through the buried city.
The small Perugia was chosen by the National Geographic Traveler as the most sexy city in the world. One of the reasons for success is certainly the production of chocolate, which has made it famous all over the world, but also the fact that it is a hilly, highly curvy, and therefore appealing, and small town, welcoming, protective. Perugia has a well-established tradition for chocolate, and the custom wants the lovers of this cake to go to Perugia on the occasion of the Eurochocolate event, a chocolate kermesse that takes place in the second half of October. Climbing on the hills, Perugia is a generous panoramic view dispenser. Hidden behind arches or airy and open on spatial and urban shades, there are plenty of places to admire fantastic sunsets and valleys.
