Caltagirone and surroundings
About 70 km southwest of Catania, between the Erei and Iblei mountains rises Caltagirone, an important center known for the millennial tradition of ceramics production. Caltagirone is a city of art, one of the main references of ceramics in Italy, a real pearl that holds numerous masterpieces of great importance thanks to which it has earned the nickname of 'City of ceramics'.Cattagiruni (as called by its inhabitants) is a large municipality of 39,333 inhabitants belonging to the municipalities of the Val di Noto, proclaimed by UNESCO as a world heritage of humanity. The city is relatively young in fact it was completely destroyed following the disastrous earthquake of 1693 and then rebuilt by architects such as Battaglia, Gagliardi and Bonaiuto which gave it a decidedly Baroque style, later enriched with Art Nouveau suggestions. The city has an urban structure in which the part of the historical center that is located at the top, is distinguished from the modern zone more south-east. A walk through the quaint neighborhoods of the historic center can reserve visitors pleasant and unexpected surprises.
