Melpignano and surroundings
Melpignano is 26 Km from Lecce and is a small but historically important village. The area was inhabited since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the presence of some ancient menhirs in the area. Its origins as a village are perhaps magno-greek, or you prefer to propose for Roman origin. Indeed, for some Melpignano historians, it was founded by Greek aborigines from the Peloponnese, who came with Enotrio Arcade; for others it derives from the Roman centurion Melpinio whom these lands were assigned after the conquest of the Romans to the Messapi. In any case, Roman rule and Roman rule followed, the city followed Greek costumes, idioms and rituals. Then the Normans and the feudalism came and Melpignano became part of the Lecce County. King Tancredi granted the town's feud to Giambattista Lettere in 1190, and he was the first feudal lord. In 1396 he was transferred to Castro's Constellation under the power of the Orsini del Balzo and then of King Ferrante d'Aragona, who gave the feast to Aiello Tarantini, from which he passed to the Musco di Lecce, then to the Ramirez d
