Massa Martana and surroundings
The peculiarity of the area where the town of Massa Martana is located is the richness of woods, formed by Mediterranean scrub. The first settlements are to be connected to the construction of the Via Flaminia, around 220 BC. The Roman presence is witnessed, among other things, by the Bridge of Fonnaia, of the 3rd century BC Near the village there is a wonderful catacombic system of the III-V century AD. At the 5th century AD Massa Martana hosted several saints, from S. Felice, to Fidenzio to Terenzio, to Faustino, Santa Illuminata. It was devastated during the Gothic-Byzantine wars, taking the same fate as the nearby Carsulae, but under the rule of Spoleto, found a new life. The commune and its territory were sprinkled with old churches built along the route of the ancient Via Flaminia between which must be remembered by Santa Maria di Pantano, San Faustino, Santa Illuminata, Santi Fidenzio and Terenzio, Santa Maria della Pace and San Pietro super aquas. Also interesting is the picturesque fortified village of Villa San Faustino, where the Church of the same name of Roman origins is located. A precious example of Romanesque architecture, the Church of S. Illuminata, frescoed with works, dating back to the Romanesque period. Also worthy of note are the numerous castles scattered around the town, such as Castello delle Rocchette, Castelvecchio, Castello di Vieri, Castel Rinaldi, Castello di Gagliole, Rocca di Bonaccorso, the Castle of Montignano, the Castle of Colpetrazzo, the Castle of Mezzanelli .
