Viareggio and surroundings

The sea shining on one side, the white snowy summit of the Apuan Alps on the other. This is Viareggio, the pearl of Versilia. Born as a gateway to the sea of Lucca, Viareggio owes its name from the road regis, the road that in the Middle Ages connected it to the capital. Its foundation dates back to 1172, when Lucchesi and Genovesi, allies against Pisa, built a famous fortified fort that year. The oldest fortification of the city, the Matilde Tower, dates back to 1500 and was built by Lucchesi to defend itself against pirates. All around is the original neighborhood of the city that grew along the Burlamacca canal, which is still the ideal catch for the fishermen and for the many caravans that own a small boat. The evolution of Viareggio from a simple harbor to the city was not easy. Only in 1819 Duchess Maria Luisa of Bourbon built the first dock, and only the year after the town was elevated to the rank of town. It is necessary to move to 1822 to see Viareggio become a tourist center, thanks to the vacancy of Napoleon Bonaparte's sister, Paolina Borghese, Viareggio assumed the features of the famous seaside resort, dating back to 1828 for the first bathing establishment. The tourist culture in Viareggio has always been associated with that of art found in the Civic Museums of Villa Paolina and in the beautiful Art-deco and Liberty vestiges that adorn the city, its best examples. The Promenade is the showcase of Viareggio : a large boulevard of over 3 km lined by the sea decorated by the liberty architecture, from the Bath to the Caffè Margherita, where he loved to sit Giacomo Puccini. But Viareggio means mostly Carnival: four weeks of madness where tourists from all over Italy come to admire the most famous paperwork allegorical wagons in the world. A tradition born in 1873 when a group of young bourgeois who attended the Casino Cafe launched the idea of a procession of carriages and masks along the avenue to the sea. Since then, for 4 Sundays in a row, the wagons pass through the Promenade: huge paperwork caricatures that ironically mock the world of politics or performances. An artisan tradition that gets married with satire and that every year faces the great themes of the present day laughing on it. After the parade of the wagons, the fun in Viareggio continues with the wards: festivals that every weekend involve the four districts of the city, during which the streets closed to the traffic are filled with masks, music and dances.
