Syracuse

Protesting on the sea with the promontory-island of Ortigia, the oldest nucleus of the city, Siracusa has many faces and is undoubtedly one of the most important Sicilian destinations. It is not hard to imagine the grandeur of the city of a time when Siracusa was the largest Greek city in the West. It is enough to visit the archaeological site of Neapolis, northwest of Ortigia, and set foot in the majestic Greek theater with excellent acoustics, which still hosts classic theater performances; not far away are the Ear of Dionysus, an imposing artificial cave that has acoustic features that amplify the sounds up to sixteen times, and the bases of what was the Ierone Ara. But traces of the magnificence of the Greek era are also found in Ortigia, where the remains of the Temple of Apollo emerge, the oldest in Sicily (late VII century BC). The island (the Syracusans call it "rock"), which together with the other four nuclei of the city (Acradina, Tiche, Neapolis and Epipoli) constituted the so-called Pentapolis, testifies the secular stratification of architectural styles. The best thing is to take some time just to stroll, with your nose up, for the narrow and fascinating streets of Ortigia: past the Duomo built on a Doric temple of the 16th century. V a.C. and reshaped over the centuries to acquire the current Baroque appearance, and from the millennial Fonte Aretusa, finally to the Castle Maniace, wanted by Frederick II, on the extreme tip of the island. Noto is one of the most fascinating places in the province of Siracusa, a town completely destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt ten kilometers further down the valley thanks to the valuable contribution of some of the most important engineers and architects of the time. The revival of Noto took place in the course of the 16th century. XVIII according to the urban-architectural canons of the 18th century Sicilian culture. The new city is today considered a baroque jewel of rare beauty. A garden of tuff and limestone that develops on a chessboard plant, dotted with stately palaces, churches and historic buildings with monumental façades. Real works of art, designed and carved by skilled hands and enriched with sculptural and bas-relief decorations. The main artery of Noto, opened by the monumental Royal Gate, is Corso Vittorio Emanuele. A long and straight road, surrounded by three large squares that house three of the most important town churches: the Church of San Francesco dell'Immacolata (in Piazza dell'Immacolata), the Church of Santa Chiara (also known as the Church of Santa Maria Assunta ) and the Cathedral of Noto (in Piazza Municipio, a few steps from Palazzo Ducezio, seat of the Commune). The Basilica, dedicated to St. Nicholas, striking above all for the elegant staircase and the majestic facade, while the interiors are still under restoration after the collapse of the dome of 1996. The best time to visit Noto is during the month of May, during the Baroque Spring and the Infiorata of Via Nicolaci (third Sunday of May).
