Rossano and surroundings
Rossano is a very ancient and famous city; it has always played a major role. It is presumed founded by the Romans who gave it the name Roscianum even though the finds of necropolises, furnishings and other archaeological material suggest that Rossano was inhabited by populations long before the arrival of the Romans. For its naturally fortified position is a "fortress town" of great importance. Inexpanded by Alaric's visigoths in 412 and by the Longobards in 573, during the Greek-Roman War, under the dominion of the Byzantine Empire, becomes one of the most active centers in Italy from the 6th to the 11th century. the only city in the South of Italy to resist the incessant and ruinous raids of the Arabs and never be conquered by the Saracens of Sicily. First-class military center is one of the most important political-administrative centers in the Byzantine rule that houses the highest dignitaries of the Byzantine court of the Italo-German empire (Ottone III emperor of Saxony), giving the Pope San Zosimo ( 417-418). From 951 to 983 it is the capital of Byzantine possessions in Italy. "Byzantine" has a very important role in religious and cultural history since it has long been a reference point for the Greek-Christian spirituality and civilization of the entire Medieval Age. The monks looking for areas protected by the Byzantine garrisons build "digging" in the tuffed caves of the "hermitic-laurelic"

Ovviamente delusi!
