Rimini and surroundings
Holiday area par excellence, Rimini boasts a long tourist tradition. It was in fact in 1843 that the first bathing establishment in Italy was inaugurated on the beach of Rimini. Since then, over the years, this vocation of hospitality spread from Rimini along the coast, from Riccione to Cattolica, from Bellaria to Misano. Rimini has also recorded a progressive tourism enhancement of its hinterland which, thanks to its natural beauties, historical attractions and artisan and gastronomic traditions, offers a valid integration of the seaside holiday. This land, in fact, is rich in relics of the past, a memory of an ancient history dating back to ancient Rome. Etruscan city and celta, a colony of Latin law of the year 268 BC, the imperial town at the time of Augustus, Rimini was equipped with splendid monuments. Later, during the Renaissance, it was the capital of the Lordship of the Malatesta and knew the splendors of a magnificent court and the presence of architects, painters and sculptors among the most famous in Italy. The Arch of Augustus and the Tiberius Bridge, the Malatestian Temple and Sigismondo's Rock in Rimini, and the numerous castles and ancient churches on the hills of the hinterland, represent an artistic and cultural patrimony that is worth knowing. Not to be missed is a visit to the Museum of the City that keeps the past of Rimini and its territory, from the geological formation to our day, through fifteen hundred works. A stone's throw from the Museum, a Roman dwelling called Domus del Chirurgo has recently been brought to light, a small Pompeii with its splendid mosaics and an exceptional surgical-pharmaceutical kit, considered the richest in the world since ancient times
