Cirò is an ideal starting point for discovering the pearl of the Mediterranean: the CALABRIA region
If Magna Grecia is a distant memory from a school text book, a trip to Calabria will be a great opportunity to brush up a bit of history. Walking in any of the many archaeological sites, you will feel like breathing the air of the people who came from Greece, starting from VIII BC, to colonize the territory. An ideal itinerary, from north to south, can start from Cirò (the ancient Krimisa) - do not miss the Temple of Apollo Aleo (6th century BC) in Punta Alice - and continue along the coast to reach Crotone.
Founded in 709 BC, the old Kroton was one of the most powerful colonies of Magna Grecia and home to, among other things, Pythagoras's philosophical school.
Nearby, in Capo Colonna, stands what was one of the most famous sanctuaries of Magna Grecia, the temple of Hera Lacinia. Pointing south along the Ionian coast - and in the meantime it would not be a bad idea to go for a swim for example in Isola di Capo Rizzuto - you will reach Locri. The ancient Lokroi Epizephyrioi was the last of the Calabrian colonies, and yet it was not long before it became one of the most important.
The archaeological area, where the remains of the theater are visible, is located about 4 km south of the city.
