Foligno Colfiorito
Colfiorito is a mountain village in the municipality of Foligno (PG). The village is the largest of the vast plateau, about 300 hectares, where, at an altitude of 781 m above sea level, along the Val di Chienti State Highway 77 connects Foligno to Macerata; part of the plateau falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Serravalle di Chienti, in the province of Macerata. At the foot of Mount Orve, near the current cemetery of Colfiorito, there are 250 burial tombs, complete with pottery, iron weapons and Ornamental objects, some dating back to the 10th century BC The remains of a village of the Iron Age (9th century BC) are located a short distance away. During the Roman period, in 178 BC, the town was a town hall named Plestia or Plestina. Archaeological excavations have exposed remains of late-republican artefacts, such as a hole, a temple, and other buildings with mosaic floors and porches. In the 5th century, the city was a diocese and is still a headquarter. In the 10th century, after the abandonment of the town of Plestia, the Cathedral church of Santa Maria was rebuilt in the site, witnessing the importance of the area, a strategic communication node between Umbria and the Adriatic regions, while the inhabited area It settled on the cave called "Pizzale". Beginning in the 12th century, the plain area nestles and rebuilds around the ancient castles, small fortified pre-Roman settlements built on top of the surrounding hills (Annifo, Lignano, Popola). In 1269 the town of Foligno built the castle, which took on considerable civil and military importance. During and during World War II, Colfiorito hosted a fascist prison camp. The plateau is known for its cultivation of red potatoes and lentils, which are also sold directly by small producers, constantly present along the state road 77.
