Drink and surroundings
Thirty-five kilometers from Perugia and 148 from Rome, in the heart of Umbria, here is Bevagna, a classic town of 4.600 inhabitants of the Umbrian Valley. Of probable Etruscan origin, Bevagna is contemporary of Rome (then it was called Mevania, probably from the name of a local Etruscan noble). There are still many traces of ancient Rome to Bevagna. In addition to the general structure of the city, which developed around the cardo and decumanus of the ancient settlement, still remain the Roman baths, decorated with beautiful mosaics, an amphitheater, on which were built medieval houses, a column that makes a fine show of it in the center of the main square and some architectural remains in the town churches. At one time Bevagna was known for the production of fine canvas, called "bevaglione". Today Bevagna is famous for the medieval re-enactment of the Gaite Market, which takes place every year in June and attracts many Italian and foreign tourists. We recommend an Umbria farmhouse to fully enjoy the event. Roman mosaics are the remains of a temple, a thermal building and a theater, while the beautiful medieval square dates back to the XII-XIII century. On the square is the Palazzo dei Consoli, built in 1270, which since 1886 houses the Torti Theater. Medieval times are the churches of S. Silvestro, S. Michele, SS. Domenico and Giacomo and the church of S. Francesco which is located on the highest point of the city. The cultural heritage of the city is the Bevagna Museum, structured in three parts dedicated respectively to archeology, medieval documentaristics and painting. town hosts every year some important events such as the Medieval Spring in April, an event dedicated to food and wine and craft products, the exhibition Arte in Tavola and the Market of Gaite, a medieval banquet held in June, with the historical parade, competitions and medieval re-enactments involving the four gaite, ie the four quarters of Bevagna: San Giorgio, San Giovanni, San Pietro and Santa Maria.
THE TRADE MARKET
The Gaite Market is inspired by the ancient division of Bagnaia (a municipality of just over 5,000 inhabitants in the province of Perugia and is among the most beautiful villages of Italy) in four districts named Gaite, on which the administrative organization of city in the Middle Ages The aim of the event is to reconstruct the daily life of the inhabitants of Benevento in the period between 1250 and 1350 with the greatest historical relevance and abundance of detail. For this purpose, since 1983 a group of scholars has examined the Sixteenth century statute of the town of Bevagna from which the information necessary for the historical reconstruction of political, administrative, economic and social life is taken. For ten days, then, at the end of June Bevagna takes a dip in this remote past: the old shops of medieval crafts reopen their doors and resume activities and streets are populated by drinking that in vintage clothes live everyday life of their apes by eating, working, playing just like them
