Scansano and surroundings

The town is known for having given the name to Morellino di Scansano, a red wine with controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin produced in our Maremma. Scansano is part of the municipality of Grosseto, which is about 20 kilometers away. The ancient village stands on a hill that rises between the Valle dell'Ombrone and the Valle dell'Albegna, in an area rich in archaeological finds from the Etruscan-Roman period. The village, of medieval origins, was controlled by the Aldobrandeschi family since the thirteenth century and, during the fifteenth century, it was inherited by the Sforza family following a marriage and included in their county that went to Castell'Azzara. At the beginning of the seventeenth century Scansano became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, following the fate of all the other centers of the Sforza county. Between 1780 and 1897 the regulation of the excavation raised the town of Scansano to the role of "vicecapoluogo" of the province of Grosseto. The historical core of the town is enclosed within the walls of the ancient castle of Scansano, of which are preserved some stretches leaning against the houses, a round tower and a sixteenth-century door. In the historic center there are many well-preserved palaces built in the Middle Ages, including the Spedale, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo Pretorio which houses the Archaeological Museum with finds from the area of Ghiaccio Forte and the Museum of Vine and Wine . The Church of San Giovanni Battista, of medieval origins, was restored during the eighteenth century; the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, reconstructed in neoclassical forms, is located outside the walls along the road that leads to Manciano.Exiting from Scansano meets the convent of Petreto, reachable by following a secondary road on the left, immediately before the junction for Manciano and Roccalbegna. The complex of buildings, in its current appearance, can be traced back to the beginning of the 16th century but may have been founded in ancient times; the convent was the subject of various renovations between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. According to one news, an older convent dedicated to St. Peter, at the beginning of the fourteenth century, would have hosted a group of heretical fates followers of Fra Dolcino. Dolciniani are similarly reported also in the convents of Monte di Muro di Scarlino, the Nave di Montorsaio and San Giovanni di Gavorrano. The fragmentary nature of these news will not, however, allow us to identify San Pietro with Petreto with certainty. The convent is not open to the public. You can visit only the church, addressing the parish priest of Scansano. Other attractions of the surrounding area are the castles and ancient villas. We point out the Castle of Montepò, the Castello di Cotone and the Fattoria di Pomonte (formerly Villa Sforzesca).
