Casole d'Elsa and surroundings

Casole d'Elsa, a small town in the province of Siena, which has about three thousand inhabitants, is historically a boundary reality: the village has been controversial since the beginning of 1200 BC between Volterra and Siena, then inevitably involved in the war between Guelph and Ghibellini. After a year of Florentine rule, Casole was finally admitted to the domains of Siena after the battle of Montaperti. The present conformation of this medieval hamlet finds its soul of controversial land, with the relief of the wall and the Rocca Senese, today the seat of the commune. To see the splendid Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the archaeological and collegiate museum. Of great environmental importance are its forests, which are made up of the Forest of Berignone and the forests of the Montagnola Senese.
Its history is remembered every year with the Palio di Casole, horse race on land called "Roman" or "Long", that is, with different starting and arrival points. This event attracts many tourists who spend their holidays in Tuscany around Siena and who visit curiosities nearby villages for the traditional events and celebrations of each of these places.
Another important event is the Living Nativity of Casole, an impressive and accurate reconstruction of Bethlehem two thousand years ago that has brought to the village of Casole d'Elsa important prizes such as "Best Nativity of Italy" and "Crib Town".
