With almost 15 thousand inhabitants, it is one of the most populous towns in the Sassari area. Sorso is a town in the historic territory of Romangia, which overlooks the Gulf of Asinara with a long coastal stretch of sand dunes, sheltered by pines, junipers and dwarf palms. The 18 kilometers of beaches, just a few minutes from the town, are divided between the beautiful Marina di Sorso and the Sorsese coast of Platamona: blue sea, light and fine sand and Mediterranean scents. The inhabited center rises among olive groves and vineyards, from which excellent oil and vermentino derive, which makes it number among the cities of wine. Fruit and vegetables are also cultivated: at the end of July, do not miss the aubergine festival. Among the delicacies, desserts: papassini and saba cozzuli. Beautiful and characteristic is the traditional feminine dress. Among the Sorsesi specificities, its 'border language', which includes Logudorese, Tuscan and Genoese elements and Corsican influences. The toponym derives from josso ('under'), indicating the lower altitude compared to the nearby Sennori. The historic center, called Bicocca, has a medieval layout: it is divided into simple tuff houses. Seventeenth-century buildings stand out: the baronial palace, now a cultural center, and the Billellera fountain, built in imitation of the Rosello fountain in Sassari: according to tradition, drinking its waters would drive you crazy. A Gelidon, legendary ancestor of the Sorsese population, which was attributed a rebellious and crazy nature, is linked to the most famous archaeological site, two kilometers from the village: Jelithon, inhabited since prehistoric times. Attendance of the territory since the pre-Nuragic age is also attested by the domus de Janas of L'Abbiu. While some nuraghes and the sacred well of Serra Niedda date back to the Bronze Age. In the 5th century BC the Carthaginians established a fortress on the site of the holy Filitica, later occupied by the Romans until the late imperial age. Here arose a Roman villa with floor adorned with mosaics and thermal establishment, a few steps from the sea. On it, in the Byzantine period, an early Christian building was built, then the church dedicated to the saint. In the center there is also the parish church of San Pantaleo, built in 1836 where once there was a church of the fifteenth century and inspired by neoclassical canons: you will see its spectacular domes and little domes appearing at the top of the main street. The patron is celebrated at the end of July. Other churches, all of the seventeenth century, are the Blessed Virgin of Itria, around which the defile of St. Constantine runs around the beginning of July, and the Madonna di Noli me tollere, seat of a deeply venerated simulacrum (especially during the late May feast) and the Baroque Saint Pasquale Baylon, seat of the Jesuits, in addition to the late Gothic oratory of Santa Croce (16th century). The churches are full of passion and devotion during Holy Week.
