Vieste and surroundings

In the eastern part of the Gargano is located in Vieste. Around it the most varied landscapes of Puglia: from the coast, where the pines almost wet their foliage in the clear water, under the restful shade of the secular olive trees and almond trees clinging on gentle slopes; from the vineyards, the mediterranean vegetation full of scents from the forest of oak trees and the wonderful forest in a tangle of branches and foliage that hardly let you see the rays of the sun, the "masserie" and the "haystacks" that populate the countryside; from the natural caves, those hewn by men, used, often, in the past, such as dwellings and places of worship; from the majestic basilica, and to the small cave churches, from the relics of ancient civilizations, the presence of brand-new equipment to hotel and extra-hotel; from the colorful fishing boats in its picturesque harbour, a population that is fair, kind and hard-working, linked to ancient traditions of life ... the all-in-one long summer, since the days in which the temperature exceeds the day and 25°C start in the media already from the month of may and ending the end of September. The most fascinating part of the landscape viestano is, without doubt, offered by the coastal area that extends for over 30 Km in a fantastic succession of some of the most beautiful of all the Mediterranean: from wide and long beaches of golden sand, the coast is high and rocky, and their color, which ranges from dazzling white to pink, to yellow of the limestone eroded, stands out in an astonishing manner against the intense blue of the sea, scattered rocks and islets. The rock is broken by the picturesque bays that can accommodate white beaches, while elsewhere the sea erosion has created caves that contain unsuspected charm of lights and colors. Names such as the bay of San Felice (with massive stacks and a hardy "architiello", a charming open archway in the rock), Camps bay (closed by a small island), cala Sanguinara, bay Portogreco, the bay of Pugnochiuso, baia di Vignanotica, in one of the caves of the Smugglers (with two outputs), Bell small, Hot (so named for the presence of sources luke-warm), Pierced (high 40m from the collapsed vault overlook the twisted Aleppo pine), two Eyes (with two openings, one next to the other, from which they filter out slashes of the magical blue light), of Pigeons, of Marbles, of the Sirens, of the Rooms, have made Vieste famous all over the world. The erosion of the sea and of the winds has, moreover, detached from the mass of rock a giant monolith, and up to about 20m, called "Pizzomunno". In this respect, it passed on a tender legend of love: Beloved, the daughter of a sea god, fell in love with the city of Vieste. Their love was, however, impossible, so the parents of the Beloved, transformed Pizzomunno, this is the name of the young lover, in a rock. Every hundred years, in the nights of the full moon, the rock in the middle of the sea resumes her human form to return to the embrace of the beloved. From legend to history is a short step, and invites to a dive into the past. Traces of prehistoric villages and ancient civilizations provide us with a sense of mystery and mystic solemnity that envelops and charms, that is certainly one of the most ancient towns in the Daunia. Vieste also has a historical sequence, uninterrupted from the neolithic age to the modern age, and every where resound the deeds and events that have had their theatre in an architectural complex of beautiful: the medieval village, with its narrow alleys and stairways between white houses, perched on a rocky promontory, topped by the Castle and the Cathedral.Recently have been identified on the walls of a cave on the islet of faro di Vieste inscriptions on ancient and medieval some of which attest that the cave was dedicated to Venus Sosandra ("savior of men"). An extraordinary discovery that brings back the problem of the location of Uria garganica (where Catullus testifies it was practised in the worship of Venus), and helps equip new charm in the city "... all white as a vestal, and the sacred fire burns in the white lighthouse the ligurian from the low islet candido also, that elongates like a cetacean at the surface of the water ...", as was written by Elsa Raimondi, sensitive writer. From Vieste we leave the motorboats and hydrofoil for the Tremiti Islands, which emerge from the sea about 20 Km off the northern coast of the Gargano. It is a group comprised of three islands (San Domino, San Nicola and Capraia) of only 3 Sq km and some rocks, where the water has the colour of the most transparent sapphire and coves where it is still possible to listen to the illyrian turned in the gulls on the night with a human voice crying their extinct Diomede.
From Vieste, a road bordered by gorse leads to the Forest Umbra (29 Km), impressive for the beauty of the specimens, for the silence and solitude that reign, broken only by the singing of myriads of birds and the sound of the foliage of the trees shook from the wind. And' one of the greatest natural jewels of southern Italy (10,000 hectares), where - among other things - are prepared in many service areas, pedestrian paths, a visitor centre (see important prehistoric archaeological finds in the area, as well as the representation, with specimens of stuffed, of the local fauna). Crossed the forest, and along the inside area where you can observe a real "landscape stone", built partly by nature and partly by man (stone walls, temporary shelters, called "barns", "farms", fences to protect the animals, etc), you can reach Monte Sant'angelo (Km 61 from Vieste), the characteristic medieval village and religious center that developed around the sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, one of the most ancient of christianity, the whole very suggestive of the cavity cut in the rock, and added architectural features from various eras.
The scenic coastal road to the South of Vieste then you can reach in 40 Km in the Morning, the white island of houses sandwiched between olive groves and rugged mountains that encircle the sides, and, in 60 Km, Manfredonia, town founded by king Manfredi.
The coastal road to the North of Vieste leads to Peschici, Rodi Garganico and the coastal lakes of Lesina and Varano.Whatever route you take, the return to Vieste and always brings new emotions. Vieste, with its horizons, its blond beaches and its virgin bays, its pristine flashes of marine life that is filled with the scent of seaweed and gorse, its meandering, its caves of rare beauty, its ancient coastal watchtowers, the white and the old town centre, with its oasis of green, its rural architecture, its ancient culture, its simple and genuine cuisine, its long summer, its lively "May", and its modern facilities ... This alternation of nature, history, monuments, and the charm that fascinates the thousands of tourists who, in search of new emotions, crowd Vieste, rightly defined by Cosimo Bertacchi "extreme city that surrounds the mountain as a system of gems nestled between the emerald green shore and the blue of the sea"; the extreme "lace world" where, as stated by Elsa Raimondi, perhaps "exiled poetry of love".
