Otranto and surroundings

Located on the Adriatic coast of the Salento peninsula, Otranto is located on the easternmost stretch of Italy, about 45 km from Lecce, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. The UNESCO recognized the "ancient village of Otranto" on title of cultural heritage as "Site of peace messenger". The journey begins along the Lungomare degli Eroi, at the foot of the ancient village. After passing the monument dedicated to the Martyrs, by the sculptor Antonio Bortone, go down the stairs and, passing through Porta Alfonsina, you enter the old city where the Aragonese manor and the Cathedral with its precious mosaic floor and the relics of the 800 Martyrs deserve a visit. slain by the Turks in 1480.Outside the inhabited center you let yourself be enchanted by the emerald green lake set among the coral-colored mounds of the bauxite quarry while the majestic lighthouse of Punta Palascìa awaits the first dawn of the Belpaese every year, Porto Badisco preserves the pictograms that fresco the walls of the Grotta dei Cervi, the "Sistine of the Neolithic".
