Opi and Surroundings
Human settlement in the territory of Opi has ancient origins as evidenced by the discovery of remains of a fortified center in the place where lies the village, by the many archaeological finds from the necropolis of Val Fondillo and the remains of a probable temple in town "houses" and "source of Lecina". Located in a beautiful natural amphitheater, surrounded by lush wooded mountains, Opi still preserves the ancient medieval village characteristics, unique for the position and appearance of great archaeological interest. The first news about the origin of the name are found in an anonymous collection published at the end of the last century. Some of these, linked to ancient mythological beliefs, trace the name Opi the Roman goddess of OPE earth, sister and wife of Saturn, the daughter of Heaven and Vesta; Opice other high priestess of the Temple of Vesta, one of the five temples that made up a sanctuary in the mountain village now.
The most reliable hypothesis, however, seems to be that the name derives from the Latin OPPIDUM, fortified castle, in fact, the structure of the village, dating from the year one thousand, with houses built next to each other on the edge rocks, causes a wall to protect the country. (By men and territory C.Savastano-Edigrfital) .At the village of Opi you can see the seventeenth-century palace now the Town Hall, the baroque chapel of St. Giovanni Battista, the church of Santa Maria Assunta of the twelfth century, which It preserves the original structure of the majestic bell tower, since the church was damaged several times by earthquakes that have come across the country, it was rebuilt in its present form in the seventeenth century. In it there are three anonymous oil paintings of the nineteenth century, depicting the Baptism of Christ, the Beheading of san Giovanni Battista, Purgatory.
