Carnevale Di Ronciglione

The Carnival of Ronciglione is an event that takes place during the carnival period in Ronciglione (VT) and is considered among the 10 most beautiful carnivals in Italy. It originates from the derivation of the Roman Renaissance and Baroque carnival and there are official documents attesting the 'existence for over 130 years. The event presents several shows related to the history of the country: from the rides of the Ussari to the race of the Berbers, from the "Red Noses" to the "Course of Gala" .Symbol of the carnival of Ronciglione, are the said races " dei Barberi ", which take place between horses not mounted by a jockey, such as those that took place in Rome, along Via del Corso, and Siena, along Via di Città, now disappeared. The origins of this tradition go back to the times of Pope Paolo III Farnese (1465) .The city is divided into 9 stables (districts) with different colors and drapes, which compete for the "Palio della Manna". A group of knights, dressed in 19th century costumes, are lancian or in a ride through the streets of the village, which recalls the period of French domination. Legend has it that a captain of French hussars, stationed in Ronciglione in defense of the Papal State, fell in love with a beautiful lady, to strut before his eyes filed several times at the head of his dragons, thus giving rise to tradition.

Palazzo Farnese di Caprarola

The Palazzo Farnese (or Villa Farnese) is located in Caprarola in the province of Viterbo in Lazio. It is one of the best examples of Mannerist dwellings. It was built for the Farnese family. Owned by the Italian Republic, since 2014 it has been managed by the Polo Museale of Lazio. The palace was one of the many noble residences built by the Farnese family in its domains. Initially it had to have defensive characteristics as it was common in the noble residences of the Latium territory between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The project for a fortified residence was initially entrusted to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese the Elder. The works began in 1530, but were suspended in 1546 due to the death of Sangallo. The cardinal Alessandro the Younger, who set up in his turn in Caprarola, wanted to resume his grandfather's project, so, in 1547, he entrusted the construction to Vignola, but the works resumed only in 1559. Vignola radically changed the original project: the construction, while maintaining the pentagonal plan of the original fortification, it was transformed into an imposing Renaissance palace, which later became the summer residence of the cardinal and his court. In place of the corner ramparts, the architect inserted large open terraces onto the surrounding countryside, while at the center of the residence was a circular two-storey courtyard, with the upper slightly set back. Vignola cut the hill with stairways in order to isolate the building and, at the same time, integrate it harmoniously with the surrounding territory; furthermore, a straight road was opened in the center of the village below, so as to visually connect the palace to the town and exalt its dominant position over the village. Inside the sumptuous residence worked the best painters and architects of the time. The themes of the frescoes were inspired by the literary Annibal Caro and realized by Taddeo Zuccari, then replaced, at his death (1566), by his brother Federico Zuccari, Onofrio Panvinio and Fulvio Orsini. The villa is annexed the "Farnesian Gardens" (with the same name of the gardens of the family on the Palatine hill in Rome), a splendid example of late-Renaissance garden, built through a system of terraces behind the villa, perched on the hill from which the building stands and connected by Vignola with the residence through bridges. The works for the garden were begun in 1565 by Giacomo Del Duca, using the earth for the unloading of the foundations of the Church of the Gesù in Rome, and ended only in 1630, under the direction of Girolamo Rainaldi. The small building inside the gardens was chosen by Luigi Einaudi as a summer residence in the seven years of his Presidency of the Republic (1948-1955). The palace was instead finished two years after Vignola's death. can admire its pentagon shape with a circular courtyard in the middle. This courtyard was sloping towards the center, where inside it was located a "mouth of truth" that collected all the rainwater that was used for every good of daily use (washing, cooking, etc. ..). The building is framed by the road that extends into the square in front of the main facade (where the entrance is located). Originally all around it was surrounded by a moat. The various rooms are subdivided according to a very precise and modern scheme: the summer area to the north-east, where the sun did not beat, and the winter area to the south-west where the sun beat. The areas of the servants were separated from the cardinal area and were even made from the thickness of the walls. Attached to the servants' rooms were the kitchens and the stores. In this area was housed the scale of the paper, a helicoidal ramp that allowed to drop, through a guide carved into the handrail, a paper bag, with sand or pebbles inside, so as to quickly reach the lower floors confidential messages. The mezzanine floor is called Piano dei Prelati. It can be accessed both from the external staircase and from the inside. On this floor there are the rooms frescoed by Taddeo Zuccari, the rooms of the seasons of Vignola and the room of the guards. The courtyard, reachable from these rooms, is circular in shape and made by Vignola himself. It is composed of two overlapping porticoes, with vaults frescoed by Antonio Tempesta. Vignola was also the author of the frescoes on the internal staircase (the Scala Regia). This revolves around 30 columns of peperino, through which, according to legend, the cardinal passed by on horseback to reach the noble floor. On the mezzanine floor there is the main floor, whose summer area was frescoed by Taddeo Zuccari. the winter was painted by Jacopo Zanguidi (called the Bertoja), by Raffaellino da Reggio and Giovanni de Vecchi. Here are placed the bedroom of the cardinal, called the Bedroom of the Dawn, and the chamber of celebrities, called Room of Fasti Farnesiani, with frescoes that sum up the life of the Farnese family. Beyond is the Antechamber of the Council, which takes its name from the fresco of the Council of Trent; in the same room there is a fresco of Paul III. Subsequently opens the Hall of Hercules, which also takes its name from the frescoes present. One of the most representative rooms of the building is the Stanza delle Geografico or del Mappamondo, which takes its name from the frescoes by Giovanni Antonio da Varese. The fourth and fifth floors were assigned to the staffers and riders.
