Ischia and the surrounding area
Generous, refined and welcoming, Ischia is an island of volcanic origin embedded in the Gulf of Naples. Its thermal waters have always been, since ancient times, a source of health and well-being. Thanks to the mild climate even in winter, it is wonderful to visit at any time of year, with its small centers overlooking romantic bays or hidden in the woods. The town of Ischia extends along the northeast coast of the island and for those coming from the continent is the first municipality and also the main center of the island of Ischia. The average altitude is 70 meters. Located on the eastern side of the island stretches from the hills of S. Alessandro to the Aragonese Castle. The territory is divided into two main landmarks: Ischia Porto, formerly called Villa dei Bagni for the presence of several spas, and Ischia Ponte, the ancient village of Celsa. Other districts are: S. Michele, S.Antuono, Campagnano, S.Alessandro, S.Ciro. The name of Ischia was extended to all the municipality at a recent age, because in ancient times the "City of Ischia" was constituted by the so-called "Aragonese Castle", where the island governor and the bishop of the diocese were based. Delightful and lively town is today the real center of the island. Part of the white and multicolored houses stretch around the crater lake, open to the sea by Ferdinand II of Bourbon and become a safe harbor. It adores the town a lush pine forest that stretches to the beaches. This town focuses on the civil and religious history of the whole island, which shows in the houses of Ischia Ponte the ancient isclana architecture. Famous for beaches, thermal springs, historic attractions, rich in luxury hotels on enchanting locations. The main monuments are: the Aragonese Castle, the Sea Museum, the Church of Our Lady of Graces and the Purgatory Souls S.Pietro, the Cathedral of the Assumption, the parish church of S.Maria di Portosalvo, the church of the Addolorata, the Antonian Library, the Seminary's Palace, the Collegiate Church of the Holy Spirit.
