Cassano allo Ionio, lying along the slopes of karstic hills, is an ancient village where the layered traces of the peoples who have succeeded each other over the centuries are clearly visible. The ancient village is a colorful alternation of tiled roofs and chimneys, different in shape and decoration, which climbs up the hills, which in ancient times housed pagan temples, creating a network of arches, courtyards and squares embellished with ancient fountains fed from the thermal spring water, coming from the Terme Sibarite, located right in the historical center of the city. The walk to the ancient village of Cassano, reveals an evocative landscape in every season embellished by palaces and noble houses of considerable architectural interest. Beautiful terraces from which you can enjoy breathtaking views overlooking the snowy mountains of Pollino to the green piana di Sibari bathed by the Ionian Sea, of an intense blue color. Do not miss the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary called del Lauro of the Byzantine age with subsequent changes occurred from the second half of the 1400s to the end of 1700. Precious frescoes dating back to the Byzantine age. Mystic is the crypt, the hidden heart of the Cathedral, an ancient monument of faith, built on two columns with Ionic capitals of the ancient Sybaris, which support the six-span structure with cross vaults. In the ancient crypt there is a wooden crucifix of the '400 and a characteristic collection of cribs, including the famous self-propelled crib, an animated and multimedia art crib that merges in a single scene the nativity in Cassano, Bethlehem and Jerusalem, for a hymn to peace and faith. The beautiful Piazza S.Eusebio da Cassano, in front of the Cathedral, is the Fountain of the Lions, the Episcopio, the Museum, the Library and the Diocesan Archives, with over 15,000 volumes from 1400 to 1900 and The bell tower dating back to 1608.Suggestivo is the symbol of the city, the Clock Tower, an artistic clock placed on the rock overlooking the city along the ancient wall that for over two hundred years competes, with tolling, with the another solar clock, placed on the side facade of the Cathedral. The protagonist of the ancient village is the limestone karst and limestone, majestic, imposing, embraces and surrounds the city with its caves. The Caves of Sant'Angelo are spectacular, a real treasure trove of the millennial historical memory of the city, where plays of lights, colors and shapes created by nature millimeter by millimeter, drop by drop, molding stalagmites and stalactites, offers a harmonious spectacle of nature. Enchanting is the Valle dell'Eiano, an unspoiled area surrounded by green hills with olive and oak trees under the watchful eye of Monte Pollino. In this enchanting setting rises the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Catena, a monastery of the eleventh century, the work of Greek-Eastern monks who takes its name from the icon depicting the Virgin Odigitria, located on the main altar, which deserves to be visited.
